Build a Welsh Stick Chair (Starts November 11)

Stick Chairs are beautiful bits of folk-furniture, they appear in almost every culture. First evidenced back to the 12th century in Wales, they were often made by local townsfolk and farmers for their own use. Sweden has its own stick chair, the Pinnstol. They are a beautiful collection of angles, a talking point, each one completely unique and feels like a fåtölj when you sit in it.

Hobby woodworker (and Welshman) Peter Akrill will teach you through the process of making a simplified version of this unique welsh chair from scratch.

Step away from your normal routine and build something with your hands!

The following is an overview of the class program:

Week 1 : Intros and transfers

Learn safety, overview the project & start making the templates

Week 2: Sandwich Drilling

You will drill the holes at the odd angles that make your stick chair unique. 

Week 3: The Seat

You start making the shape of the seat and the armbow and prepare the seat to take the legs

Week 4: Wedged Tenons

You learn the basics of making a wedged tenon joint that securely attaches the legs to the seat. 

Week 5: Levelling the chair

Make sure that your chair sits flush at the ground, giving the seat a comfortable reclined angle, and gluing all the stick into place. 

Week 6: The Comb and Finish

You add the head rest holding the sticks into place & finish your chair.
